30 Best Things To Do In Leavenworth, WA

The Pacific Northwest is absolutely breathtaking, and Leavenworth, WA is no exception! In short, Leavenworth is the most charming and enchanting village nestled in the cusp of the Cascade Mountains that will steal your heart and leave you longing for more.

There is no shortage of activities to do throughout the year in this magical town, which is why I’ve compiled a list for you of the best things to do in Leavenworth during your trip.

I had always heard how beautiful the Pacific Northwest was, but I never knew just how stunning it really is until I experienced it with my own eyes. My first trip out that way, recently, was to see Dave Matthews Band play at The Gorge Amphitheater (keep reading to find out more about this incredible venue), and to visit this gorgeous little Bavarian town.

Leavenworth completely blew me away, to say the least! From the Bavarian architecture, the incredible mountain views, the cutest little shops and hotels, tons of amazing wineries and breweries, as well as outstanding food and restaurants, Leavenworth left me with a happy soul (and wishing I didn’t have to leave)! The Old World charm and ambiance that exudes from this town had me questioning (quite a few times) if I was actually still in Washington!

Less than two and a half hours away from Seattle, this gorgeous Bavarian town is the perfect weekend getaway. The drive itself is incredibly scenic as you drift through the Cascade Mountains and follow along the Wenatchee River. Approaching from the East, we drove through countless vineyards, as well as apple, pear, lemon and peach orchards that were insanely beautiful!

Needless to say, whether you only have time to stop and visit for a day or you have an entire weekend, this hidden gem of a town will not disappoint! Keep reading to check out the best recommendations on where to stay, what to do and where to eat in this enchanting little town!

History Of Leavenworth

Curious to know how this enchanting town came to be? The village of Leavenworth was first formed in the early 1900s as a small timber town, but it struggled to survive once the railroad moved away from it. In the 1960s, the idea was formed to revitalize the town and draw in tourism by taking advantage of the beautiful mountain backdrop. The town was then remodeled and revamped into the gorgeous Bavarian village so many of us know and love today, and continues to bring in tourists year after year and season after season.

Leavenworth Hotels & Where To Stay:

1. Bavarian Lodge

We stayed at the Bavarian Lodge during our visit to Leavenworth, and we could not have been happier! It was the perfect location, right across the street from Front Street Park, and we loved everything about it. The staff was friendly, the rooms were so nice and cozy, and we even had a balcony with a view over the town. The breakfast was great, too! It was walking distance to everything in the area, and we did not want to check out when it was time to go! Plus, how cute is the architecture? Seriously felt like we were in Germany! You will not be disappointed if you choose to stay here.

2. The PostHotel

If you’re looking for the ultimate luxury accommodation during your stay in Leavenworth, look no further than The PostHotel. This adults only hotel really sets the bar high, and will not disappoint.

With breathtaking mountain views, this hotel is designed for the ultimate relaxation and experience. It looks and feels as though you’re staying in a European resort, with stunning decor, an impeccable spa and European fare.

Speaking of the spa…
Some of the amazing amenities included in the spa are:

• A eucalyptus infusion room
• A lavender high-humidity room
• Soothing saltwater hydrotherapy pools
• A customizable shower that mimics things like a summer thunderstorm & a tropical rainforest

3. Icicle Village Resort

For a slightly more affordable option that still provides a great experience, check out the Icicle Village Resort. With 2 restaurants and an on-site spa, this resort is a solid choice for your stay in Leavenworth! Complimentary breakfast is included, as well as free bike rentals and in outdoor pool and hot tub.

4. Stay at Leavenworth’s Tiny House Village

Try out the new trend in vacation accommodations: tiny house camping (my kind of glamping)!

There are 5 tiny, cute houses to choose from, each about 175-260 square feet, that surprisingly include a kitchen, flat-screen TV, dining room, bedroom and bathroom.

These tiny houses sleep 3-5 people, and are a fun and affordable option to choose for your stay in Leavenworth!

Where To Eat in Leavenworth:

5. Watershed

This was my favorite restaurant in Leavenworth, and an absolute must (in my opinion) when deciding where to eat. This chef-owned, farm-to-table restaurant lies in the heart of the Cascade Mountains and offers an ever-changing menu inspired by Pacific North West Cuisine. Do yourself a favor and order the Hama Hama Savory Clams – they were to die for! (My iPhone photo doesn’t do it justice! The meatloaf (also pictured above) was incredible as well. You really can’t go wrong with anything on the menu here!

Bonus: Monday is “local’s night” and they offer a special menu with discounted prices, plus $3 wine and beer!

6. Mana

If you’re a foodie at heart, look no further than Mana for the ultimate fine-dining experience! Per their website, this restaurant is “a local, organic, ingredient inspired, divinely orchestrated multi-course culinary experience!”

Only open on Fridays and Saturdays, this intimate restaurant offers a 3-hour, 8-course journey “through the senses.” Set in a house, all guests are seated together and served at the same time. The menu is ever-changing, and serves only beautiful, organic food and drinks. This is sure to be a culinary experience you will never forget!

Dinner on Fridays and Saturdays is $85 a person and includes options to purchase a wine pairing (which are all sustainable, boutique wines) or a non-alcoholic herbal elixir and tonic pairing. Preview a sample menu here.

7. SOUTH

If you’re wanting to branch away from the German cuisine for one meal, be sure to check out SOUTH. Breaking the Bavarian theme in Leavenworth, this lively restaurant serves up fresh and modern homemade Latin food and drinks that are sure to leave a good impression on your taste buds. A local favorite!

8. München Haus Bavarian Grill & Beer Garden

For a casual bite and to experience a taste of Germany, check out this outdoor eatery and beer garden. They are known for having great sausages and pretzels, as well as over 20 different types of mustards to choose from! Live music is common, and the patio is prepared with outdoor heaters to keep you cozy in the cold. There’s a reason this place is always busy!

9. Rhein Haus

Another German Beer Garden that boasts having the best pretzel in Leavenworth! Originally from Seattle, this Bavarian-style restaurant offers a unique selection of German and local beers to pair with their traditional German food menu consisting of classic schnitzels, gourmet brats and giant pretzels. Their patio also offers a fantastic view of the town!

10. Yodelin Broth Company & Beer Garden

This chef-owned stylish, yet rustic joint is a counter service restaurant serving hot broth bowls and updated Bavarian cuisine, along with craft beer, cider and salmon-safe wine. If that wasn’t enough to lure you in, this restaurant also offers unparalleled river to mountain views from their outdoor patio.

Yodelin offers live music every Tuesday, Thursday and Sunday evening with dinner, as well has happy hour specials.

Best Places To Get A Drink In Leavenworth

11. Icicle Brewing Co.

This is a town staple and the perfect spot to grab a local beer and lunch! This brewery has an incredible selection of beers and offers locally sourced dishes, shared plates and snacks. Plus, their ten craft beers are made using mainly locally sourced ingredients as well!

The water used to produce the beer is sourced from Icicle Creek, which is less than a mile from the brewery, the hops used are from the owner’s hometown (the Yakima Valley), the yeast is from a lab in the Columbia River Gorge, and most of the malted barley comes from Vancouver, Washington.

The outdoor patio in the front is lively and fun, and you can never get enough of the incredible mountain views in the distance, in my opinion! Plus, there are built in misting fans surrounding the patio for hot days, and built in fireplaces in the tables for cold ones! It’s no wonder this place is always packed with tourists and locals alike.

My favorite beer (pictured above) was the Dark Persuasion! This milk stout is a must if you like dark ales! Tasting notes of “delicate dark chocolate with a whisper of coconut” (made with real cacao nibs and coconut, of course) make it taste like a German Chocolate Cake! I ordered the Thai Chicken Salad for lunch, which is amazing as well!

12. Stein Leavenworth

This beer hall offers the largest selection of beer in Leavenworth, with 55 beers, ciders and wines on tap! There’s usually live music playing, and the food is incredible! They’re known for their rotisserie chicken, ribs and brisket, but their Figs In A Blanket appetizer was my absolute favorite! These scrumptious little things are bacon-wrapped dates, stuffed with gouda and fried golden brown. I’m seriously drooling right now just thinking of it…

Stein is also family friendly, and offers vegan and gluten free options as well!

13. Blewett Brewing Company

This brewery serves up delicious wood-fired Neapolitan pizzas to perfectly compliment your house-brewed craft beer (or cider)!

14. Discover Local Wines From Washington

Don’t forget to check out the many wineries and tasting rooms around town! There are over a dozen in Leavenworth, and several of them are within walking distance in the main square!

Icicle Ridge Winery

Icicle Ridge Winery is a great place to start to taste some local wines, and the outside seating is perfect to take advantage of the good weather. Featured on NBC’s Today Show, this winery is one of the most unique wineries in the Pacific Northwest, and offers several award winning, hand-crafted wines.

Baroness Cellars

Baroness Cellars specializes in old world wine-making methods and European inspired wine varietals. Danielle Clement produces a handful of Italian-inspired wines such as a Miscela-Chianti style, Dolcetto and Nebbiolo, as well as a Mountain Meritage-Bordeaux style blend.

The Gewurtztraminer and the delicious Engelwein White Gluhwein (which is meant to be served warm!) come highly recommended.

Eagle Creek Winery

Eagle Creek Winery is the oldest winery in Leavenworth, as well as one of the most popular, and focuses on producing only the highest quality wines from hand-selected grapes right out of their very own vineyards! The main winery is nestled in the Cascade mountains, about 5 miles (a 10 minute drive) outside of the downtown area. If you don’t feel like venturing out, though, just stop by Eagle Creek Winery’s D’Vinery Tasting Room! This way, you can still taste the winery’s award winning wines (or buy a bottle or two) without leaving the hustle and bustle of downtown Leavenworth!

Boudreaux Cellars is another incredible winery located deep in the Cascade Mountains that has a tasting room right in Downtown Leavenworth. The owner is a multitalented winemaker who produces some of the best handcrafted wines in the Northwest and uses old school methods to create quality wines. Plus, I LOVED the Louisiana vibes with the New Orleans French Quarter-inspired ambiance which had me feeling right at home!

Sweet Treats In Leavenworth

15. Whistlepunk Ice Cream Co.

The smells coming from the Ice Cream shop were so divine I thought I had died and gone to Heaven. Seriously, everyone around could smell the sweetness in the air and it was drawing us all in! There were about 20-30 people waiting in a line out the door, and for good reason.

The waffle cones are freshly baked with cinnamon and the ice cream is house made. It doesn’t get much better, or much fresher, than this!

16. The Gingerbread Factory

This little bakery & coffee shop was so cute, and really did feel like you were stepping inside a real life gingerbread house!

They serve everything from cookies, desserts, ice cream, espresso, wraps+salads and, of course, all things gingerbread (even gingerbread houses)!

The Gingerbread Factory is a “must see” tourist destination in Leavenworth, so make sure you check this place off the list!

What To Do In Leavenworth

17. Front Street Park

Front Street Park is right in the center of downtown Leavenworth, surrounding by all the many shops, restaurants, breweries and tasting rooms that make this Bavarian town so charming.

The town often uses the park for festivals and events such as “Art In the Park,” which was going on when I was there. (I loved strolling and seeing all the local artists’ work!) Bands often play under the gorgeous Gazebo in the park center as well, which provides another fun level of entertainment.

With tons of festivals and events in this lively town, there’s bound to be some fun activities going on during your visit; however, there a few festivals that stood out to me that I wouldn’t want to miss!

18. Explore Front Street

When in Leavenworth, Front Street is the place to be! There are so many shops to explore, tasting rooms+breweries to sip along the way, foods to eat and events going on. Needless to say, the fun won’t be short-lived!

I just couldn’t get enough of the colorful Bavarian architecture and glorious blooms overflowing in this gorgeous town! Plus, that mountain backdrop isn’t too hard on the eyes, either.

You know the saying, “when in Rome, do as the Roman’s do?” Well, when in Leavenworth, do as the Bavarians do! Expect to discover unique imported treasures that one would normally find in a traditional Bavarian village: nutcrackers, music boxes, cuckoo clocks, beer steins and Christmas decorations! There are enchanting surprises captivating your sight and senses (gourmet chocolate shops, an ice cream shop that smells like it were straight out of heaven, german food cooking…) at every corner!

19. Explore Leavenworth Via Carriage Ride

Such a fun way to explore a Bavarian town, don’t you think?

There are a couple different companies that offer carriage rides, and they usually cost around $30 a ride (cash only + tip!).

Carriage Ride Companies:

• Hans Christian Andersen Carriage Company– departs next to the Mai Pole (the big blue striped pole, you can’t miss it!) on Front Street. Call Hans at (509) 885-0084.
• Leavenworth Carriage Company– departs at 9th and Front Street. Contact them at (509) 421-0679.

20. Leavenworth Reindeer Farm

Meet Rudolph and Dancer and Prancer and Vixen (plus all the others) at Leavenworth Reindeer Farm! This cute farm does tours all year round and costs $20 per person from November-February, $15 per person from July-October, and $12 per person from March-June.

Plus, in addition to reindeer, they also have ponies that greet you upon arrival (my favorite kind of greeting), free range chickens, draft horses, and even some friendly pigs!

Be sure to make a reservation ahead of time!

21. Leavenworth Summer Theater

If you’re visiting in the summer, make sure to catch an outdoor performance with a breathtaking backdrop at Leavenworth Summer Theater.

It’s currently the largest theater between Seattle and Spokane, with notable performances of titles like The Sound of Music, Disney’s Beauty & The Beast, & Hello Dolly (just to name a few).

22. Horseback Riding at Eagle Creek Ranch

Explore the beautiful Cascade Mountains on horseback via trail rides offered through Eagle Creek Ranch from April-October.

If you’re visiting during the winter, though, don’t fret! As the snow transforms the mountains, Eagle Creek Ranch takes you on your very own winter wonderland via horse drawn sled! Cuddle up under warm blankets and enjoy a 1.8 mile (35 minute) sleigh ride through the scenic mountain valley!

Don’t forget to make a reservation in advance for you horseback rides or sleigh rides! The number to book is 509-548-7798.

23. Visit The Nutcracker Museum

Labeled a “Leavenworth treasure,” the Nutcracker Museum is a truly unique experience that you shouldn’t miss during your visit!

The museum has over 7000 nutcrackers dating from the Roman Times to the present, plus artifacts found in the southeastern United States and Europe which date back thousands of years!

Did you know? It takes over 130 steps to make a nutcracker from the cutting of the wood to the finished product? German nutcrackers are made from quality products, and by skilled workers who have trained several years in the craft!

24. Explore Kris Kringl (The Christmas Store)

Open all year round, Kris Kringl has been attracting customers for 33 years and continues to grow each year.

Consider this your ultimate holiday decor one-stop-shop, with everything from ornaments and lighting to Christmas trees and even home decor!

25. Experience A Concert At The Gorge Amphitheatre

Up for a little adventure outside of Leavenworth? Try to plan your trip around a show at the Gorge Amphitheatre for the ultimate outdoor music concert experience!

The venue is about 1 hour and 20 minutes of beautiful, scenic drive from Leavenworth, and it is completely worth (it in my opinion)! The amphitheatre is situated along the Columbia River in George, WA, and is considered one of the most scenic outdoor music venues in the WORLD! (Isn’t that reason enough to add it to your bucket list?) After you’ve experienced it for yourself, you’ll understand why.

There’s no other way to describe it, other than the venue was simply breathtaking. The incredible views and atmosphere, paired with music that moves you, is the recipe for a happy soul!

Plus, there aren’t really any other great hotel accommodations nearby, so the extra drive to Leavenworth is completely worth it. (Trust me on this one…we made the mistake of staying the first night in one of the few hotel options “close to” The Gorge, and we couldn’t get out of there fast enough!)

Cave B Winery

If you go, make sure to schedule time to visit Cave B winery before the show starts!

It is located on the land right next to The Gorge, and it was such a memorable experience due to the same stunning backdrop and, of course, the incredible wine!

Make sure to allot at LEAST an hour and a half (but preferably more) before the show, as you will want to soak in the views and wine as long as you can! I could’ve stayed and enjoyed the scenery all day long (which was the plan), but unfortunately our schedule was delayed. (R.I.P. all the memories and amazing wines I could have had…)

Adventures For The Nature Lovers…

26. Colchuck Lake Hike

Considered one of the best (and one of the most challenging) hikes around Leavenworth, Colchuk Lake Hike is popular for a reason. Offering arguably the most scenic views in the area, this strenuous hike is said to be 100% worth it (and a really great work out, too).

The hike is 9 miles (around 8 hours) round trip, and it offers other enchanting views to occupy your senses the entire way. Some of the gems you will see along the way are breathtaking views of Mount Stuart and even a waterfall, before leading you to the incredible turquoise blue shimmering Alpine Lake.

NOTE: This lake is part of the Okanogan-Wenatchee National Forest, therefore, a Northwest Forest Pass is required to park your car at the trailhead! You can buy the pass online ahead of time and have it mailed to you, or you can buy one during your trip at local sporting good stores (like REI, Big 5 or other outdoor retail stores).

If you don’t want to buy an annual pass, you can buy a day pass with your specific hiking date and print it out at home to display on your windshield!

27. Lake Stuart Hike

Lake Stuart Trail is an 8.7 mile hike that features gorgeous wildflowers and stunning views! It is said to be one of the prettiest hikes in the Leavenworth area (and possibly the entire state), and is primarily used for hiking, walking, bird watching and nature exploration (duh).

The best time to visit Lake Stuart Trail is from June to October, and it is considered a moderate difficulty level (a little easier than Colchuck Lake).

You also need the Northwest Forest Pass for parking, as you will depart from the same trailhead as Colchuck Lake!

28. Icicle Ridge Trail

This is the perfect early morning hike that treats you with stunning 360 views at the top!

Gorgeous wildflowers greet you along the trail (depending on the season), which is said to be a steady uphill climb with a lot of switchbacks (although not that hard).

The trail extends for 5.5 miles and is about 1800 ft in elevation gain, which offers stunning views of the Wenatchee River, the Icicle River, some waterfalls, and (of course) Leavenworth!

Note: This trail does not loop!

29. Icicle Gorge Trail

Want to explore the Icicle River? The Icicle Gorge Trail follows along the Icicle River and is good for any skill level!

The trail is a loop of about 4.5 miles, and it also features a waterfall (and cute chipmunks).

As this is a gentle hike with low elevation gain, it is suitable for kids and adults!

30. Float The River

Who doesn’t love tubing or white water rafting?

If you’re seeking a fun, guided adventure out on the water, head over to the Wenatchee River for a splashing good time (cheesy is my middle name)!

Choose from RiverRider.com, Blue Sky Outfitters, Osprey, Alpine Adventures, River Recreation and Orion to book your river trip (although, River Rider is the most popular).

River Rider will provide everything you need to float the river, even a pet tube if you want to bring your pet along to float with you!

The best time to tube is from the end of July up until August, but depending on river and weather conditions, you may be able to tube up until Labor Day (which is when I was visiting Leavenworth and the weather was gorgeous)!

In Closing…

Leavenworth, in my humble opinion, is a magical and enchanting town that is a must-visit when traveling in the Pacific Northwest. The awe-inspiring Cascade Mountains surrounding you, along with the charming Bavarian architecture, make you feel as though you have been transported to another world (far away from the United States, at least!).

If this post didn’t quite give you the hint, I completely fell in love with this gem of a town that we were so happy to have discovered and visited during our trip in Washington. Leavenworth left my soul feeling completely content, while simultaneously leaving a burning desire in my heart to know and explore this town more.
